A Lokean Devotional Poem
cave
I left the door open
the wind and the rain
called me out from my retreat
in the middle of the storm, Loki
inky prints
trailing evidence
patterned soil
autumn’s craving
vulture crouched
wings hunched
body contorts
senses open
cold burns my lungs
eyes clear after blur
my skin stings
mountain water’s song
I surface
the way pine tasted
magic slick
sharply wild
confluence met me
without pretense
shadow of a bird
cast over my heart
and I knew it could steal it
and never drop me
I hung bats
from my earlobes
close to my throat
twice I was bitten
startled as if I hadn’t
offered them a sip
the blackest wings
held me
cradled in feather ink
crow’s
I’m greedy for trees,
river water,
the wind’s kiss
on places of my body
only nature’s been
the raven
blended
into shadow-sweep
my eye became winged
