A Lokean Devotional Vignette
“I am really just pushing myself.”
“Why?” he asks, knowingly.
“For change. I think I need change.”
“Rest is part of new birth, darling,” Loki reminds.
And my shoulders unclench.
I let go.

sun-stoked
seeding pearls
in soil
i spit out the pit
and let him in
he planted a tree
in me and didn’t let go
The tiger sun bit into my petals,
burning them like blooming wasn’t work.
I turned inward,
pink with embarrassment
for having been outside too long.
Tending my root and scent,
twirling bright leaves,
distraction,
out from under big cat’s eye,
I crept along the twining fence.
live-fire pressed into me
my ribs catch the sun
opening my spine
to it
heat moving
Fronds unfurl
toes relax
from curled
new green
heat blurs my edges
Serpentine green
sprouted from my chest
and hooked me
to love
Milk of the pine
bark skin split
dribbling through the crevice
sticky trail
new plans
The forest rose up inside me,
evergreen.
Light touched my branches
and I rippled into brilliance.
Seeded and seeding,
The whole earth, the whole sky
held in witness.
I woke clear in my head
and ground beneath me.
Healing,
a quiet recognition,
what carved me different.
My wings expanded.
I learned how to land.
